Coimbatore: A sub-inspector from Coimbatore, who was part of a special team that was chasing a gang involved in a highway robbery, sustained injuries after he was attacked with a sickle by one of the accused in Palani on Monday night.
Arumugham Nainar, who was from Perur police station, was part of a nine-member special team that went to Palani.
They were chasing the gang when the attack took place. Arumugham sustained several injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital in Palani and was later brought to Coimbatore, where he was admitted in a private hospital.
The gang was involved in a highway robbery on May 31 in Coimbatore. Despite the attack, the police officials managed to arrest two of the gang members.
The accused has been identified as Asik Ahamed, 25, a resident of Karamadai in Mettupalayam, and C Vignesh, 25, a resident of Madurai.
On May 31, a four-member gang waylaid a car of Geno Thomas, 42, a businessman from Thrissur in Kerala. He was travelling with his family and was in his way to Kerala from Ooty when the attack happened at KG Chavady check-post at 12.30am.
The gang had used weapons such as iron rods and snatched gold chains, mobile phones and cash from the family.
