BMW's top-selling crossover, the X5, is getting a major styling makeover for 2019, will be larger than its predecessor with extra passenger and cargo room, and offer an off-road package for the first time in a light truck marketed by the German luxury brand.
The X5, one of the industry's top-selling midsize luxury crossovers, will also be equipped with available new features such as a four-zone air conditioning system and a panoramic glass roof that is 30 percent larger, BMW said Tuesday.
The 2019 X5 will be available in two variants, xDrive 40i and the xDrive 50i, when it is launched in the U.S. in November.
The fourth-generation X5 xDrive 50i's 4.4-liter V-8 engine has a peak torque of 479 pound-feet that propels the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
The xDrive 40i's 3.0-liter, V-6 engine has a peak torque of 330 pound-feet and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds.
Off-road package
Available on all X5 variants, the new off-road package includes underbody protection at the front and rear, along with a two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled rear differential lock.
The interior of the 2019 X5 combines a new digital display and control concept. The latest generation of BMW's iDrive comprises a high-resolution digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3-inch center display diagonally across.
A bundle of digital services including remote services, concierge services and real-time traffic information, will come standard on the redesigned X5 for four years.
Pricing will be announced closer to the launch of sales.
More than 2.2 million X5s have been sold worldwide, with one-third of those deliveries in the U.S.
The 2019 version will be built at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, S.C., where the model has been built since its introduction nearly 20 years ago.
