Development in any sector has been achieved at the cost of natural resources. However, given the present scenario wherein the environment is at its most critical and delicate stage, prevention and conservation becomes imperative. India, as the global host for this year has decided the theme to be “Beat Plastic Pollution”. With this, the SIAM seeks to identify alternate strategies to tackle the rising plastic problem.
Understanding the pressing need for formulating and implementing methods for sustainable development, SIAM – SAFE Initiative has also taken into account the acute shortage of water that can potentially lead to a perpetual state of scarcity. Having identified that a normal car wash uses 120 litres of water per car members have introduced dry washing facility of vehicles in a bid to save water. All SIAM members are coming together to organising various drives during the World Environment day to protect the environment.
Under the all inclusive campaign, approximately one lakh vehicles underwent free vehicle fitness and pollution checks [PUCs]. Engaging with children, competitions on environment were held. Students in New Delhi attended a special training session on traffic rules and road safety organised by Delhi Police and Traffic Parks. As a part of this initiative, tips and suggestions were given to customers alongside sapling distribution and tree plantation drives. To complete the circle green processions, awareness rallies, were conducted across automobile dealership outlets.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vishnu Mathur, Director General – SIAM, said “As a responsible association that is passionate about sustainable development, we take this opportunity to align our vision of building the nation, responsibly, with our work. Indian Automobile Industry fully supports the initiatives taken by government in regard to protecting the environment. During the World Environment Day on 5 June 2018, SIAM with the support of SIAM-SAFE members are planning to take several steps to spread the awareness towards saving our environment. 7200 of our member’s dealers are participating in drive by checking the pollution level in vehicles and providing customers with free PUC certificates and sharing knowledge on the maintenance of their vehicles.
