RANCHI: Seema Mahto and Babita Devi, the
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidates who won the state assembly by-polls in Silli and
Gomia seats on May 31, took oath of office at Jharkhand Assembly on Tuesday morning.
They were sworn in to the office by Jharkhand Assembly speaker Dinesh Oraon at his office.
Speaking to media-persons after the ceremony, the newly elected legislators announced that their priority will be to serve the people of their constituencies well.
Seema, the wife of JMM’s former Silli legislator Amit Mahto, said she will put her efforts in ensuring better education for children and strengthen the basic infrastructure for the people. “There is an acute shortage of electricity in our constituency. We will stage a demonstration right after I go from here,” she said. Seema beat AJSU-chief
Sudesh Mahto by over 13,000 votes to retain the seat for JMM, which went to polls after Amit Mahto was terminated from the assembly after he was found guilty of beating a government servant in 2005 by a lower court in Ranchi in March this year.
Babita was accompanied to the assembly by her husband and former Gomia
MLA Yogendra Prasad. Prasad was terminated as MLA in February this year after he was convicted in a coal theft case by a lower court.
She said: “A lot of work is unfinished. I will try my best to finish them on time.” Babita emerged on top in Gomia after beating BJP candidate Madhav Lal Singh and AJSU-P candidate
Lambodar Mahto in a close contest.
The victories of Seema and Babita was touted by JMM and the opposition parties as significant in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.
