As the Southwest monsoon hits the Kerala coast, the Tenughat Dam Authority has taken stock of the situation to avoid flood-like situation during the forthcoming rainy season.

In order to avert the threat in the catchment areas, large amount of water from Tenughat Dam was released to maintain the water level in the reservoir on Monday. Out of ten, one gate of the dam has been opened and water was released from the dam in a bid to maintain the E1 Guide Curve for the reservoir which is between 817 feet to 852 feet, informed the Executive Engineer of Tenughat Dam.

“After opening the gate the water flow in the Damodar would be increased by approximately 1700 cusec,” added the official. District Administration also issued warning against going into the river as water flow has increased. Sudden release of more water is also expected from the reservoir any time, says warning. The officials, who are monitoring the rise in the river’s water level, said the threat of flood persists. But the possibility of a major flood in the district was low.
