BENGALURU: Green may have little to do with khaki, but
Karnataka State Reserve Police (
KSRP) personnel are out to break the stereotype associated with policemen. Between wielding lathis and controlling crowds, they are rearing more than 500 saplings which they planted on a 30ft x40ft plot and are growing a self-sufficient miniforest at their
Kudlu battalion in Bengaluru.
Wielding sickles and shovels, the KSRP personnel have taken afforestation to a different level, ensuring the forest develops its own manure and also yields enough organic fruits for consumption during lunch and tea breaks.
Bhaskar Rao, additional director general of police, KSRP, who was impressed by the fresh air and greenery on the Kempegowda International Airport campus, decided to implement the technique of growing a micro-forest in his force’s battalions.
Of the four major KSRP battalions in Bengaluru, the ninth one at Kudlu had enough land to grow a microforest.
Kuldeep Jain, commandant of the ninth battalion, ensured all his officers got their hands muddy. They planted 500 saplings, including chikoo, neem and jackfruit, in a week.
KSRP battalions in other districts are now following in the footsteps of their Kudlu colleagues.
J Ramesh, nodal officer appointed by Jain, is promoting the novel concept in Munirabad, Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Shiggaon and Shivamogga.
