The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) and state’s urban development department have floated a global tender for sterlisation of stray dogs in the state capital, bids for which would be opened on June 20.

“In next 36 months, the aim is to sterlise all the street dogs in the city in a scientific manner,” said chief veterinary officer Dr AK Rao.

He added, “However, sterilization of around 70,000 dogs in three years would not be an easy task. So, organizations with proven track record only would be assigned the job.” The company or NGO with an experience of sterlising at least 20,000 animals in last three years would be considered for the bid.

The LMC would provide infrastructure to the companies and NGOs involved in the work of sterilization, said Dr Rao. These organisations would either get money decided per sterilisation or the amount which they would be quoting in the tender.

The company or NGO, which gets the tender, will have to employ at least 5 veterinary surgeons, 15 dog catchers and 10 para-veterinary staff for the sterilisation process.

Infrastructure for sterlisation of dogs would also be developed in cities like Sitapur and Shahjahanpur where there was a dire requirement of animal birth programme, said Dr Rao.

“If we have to stop Sitapur-like incidents, concrete steps have to be taken and global tender is one of them. In the past, everyone knows some of the NGOs have hampered the work of animal birth control in the city. They have always been an obstacle in the work of animal birth control,” said Dr AK Rao, chief veterinary officer, LMC.

He added, “Recent incidents of dog bite in various areas of state capital have raised a concern about their rising population. The dogs can live with humans but one must not forget that its basic instinct is to hunt for prey in packs.”
