KOLKATA: Monsoon is likely to hit the city and other parts of
Bengal between June 9 and 11, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.
The Met office is closely watching an impending low-pressure area that is likely to form over the
North Bay. Once that happens, there will be more clarity on the exact date of the arrival of monsoon. Meanwhile, pre-monsoon showers will continue to keep the mercury under check. On Monday, locally formed thunder cells triggered showers in a few pockets while patches of cloud cover ensured a protection from the glaring sun.
“We are monitoring the development of a low-pressure area expected to form over the North Bay by June 8. This will fasten the monsoon flow towards our region, including Kolkata,” said G K Das, director (weather), Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
The southwest monsoon had hit Kerala on May 29, three days ahead of schedule. Since then, it has advanced towards other southern states and by Monday it has covered most of
Tamil Nadu and some parts of
Karnataka. According to the Met office, the rains should hit Kolkata by June 10 under normal circumstances.
