Harvey Weinstein pleads not guilty to charges of rape and sexual assault

Film producer Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of rape and sexual assault at a hearing in a New York court, according to media reports. The hearing came after a grand jury indicted Weinstein last week on the first charges brought against him by two women. Dozens more women have accused him of sexual misconduct since allegations were first reported by the New Yorker magazine and New York Times last year, sparking a broader reckoning for men who have harassed women that has caught up celebrities in all walks of life. Weinstein's lawyer Benjamin Brafman has challenged the credibility of some of the women involved and Weinstein himself has insisted he did not have non-consensual sex. Brafman said the rape charge is "absurd" and said Weinstein had a decadelong, consensual sexual relationship with the victim that continued after the alleged attack, which took place in 2013.
