THANE:
Bookie Sonu Jalan arrested in the
betting case told Thane crime branch’s
anti-extortion cell on Tuesday that filmmaker
Sajid Khan had allegedly “placed bets” on cricket
matches back in 2008. During his interrogation, though, Jalan said no monetary transaction was involved and that Khan later left for the US. The bookie added that Khan continued to follow the matches, but Jalan stopped taking bets.
Pradeep Sharma, senior inspector, Thane crime branch, told mediapersons that in 2008 Khan placed bets with Jalan on a
cricket tournament. “More specifically, on a session where one can win by guessing the total number of runs scored in five overs of a match or before lunch or tea break,” said Sharma and added that Khan was not connected with the current betting case.
Meanwhile, a CBI officer also interrogated Jalan in an enforcement directorate case allegedly involving the agency’s joint director of 2015. Sameer Buddha, brother of a former Mumbai police officer, recorded his statement with AEC and distanced himself from any betting ties with Jalan.
