London-headquartered music technology start-up ROLI has announced investment from Japanese technology giants Sony and Onkyo.

ROLI develops a series of musical instruments which appear similar to keyboards, but use soft rubber keys that allow the player to bend notes.

Sony has invested in ROLI through its ​Sony Innovation Fund. ROLI declined to disclose the amount invested, but said that it was a “significant.” The company also announced investment from Japanese audio company Onkyo.

The funding will go towards developing new hardware and software, a ROLI spokesman said. The two investments bring the total amount raised by the company to $50m (£37.3m).
