NEW DELHI: The
shooter of a
central Delhi-based gang, who has been
mobilising its
members after their leader was
jailed, has been arrested. He was planning a major robbery in south or central Delhi to illegally supply
funds to his leader in
Tihar Jail for a
‘comfortable’ stay.
Joint commissioner (crime) Alok Kumar said Deepak was part of the gang led by Hitender Chhotu, who was hired for Rs 1 crore by some builders in the Walled City to eliminate a gangster, Vijay Yadav, in 2007. Yadav had been extorting money from these builders.
Chhotu’s gang eliminated Yadav, and he and a few other members, including Deepak, were arrested in the case. The police said that after a few months, Deepak got bail and was absconding.
He was regrouping the gang to extort businessmen in the Walled City, sources said. After he failed to report back to the jail, a case of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was registered against him.
A team led by DCP Bhisham Singh and ACP Anil Dureja was formed to track him after the police got to know that Deepak had been trying to remobilise the gang, said joint commissioner of police Alok Kumar. A cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was also declared for his arrest, Kumar added. Deepak was finally arrested from Begampur Chowk in northwest Delhi.
Deepak told cops he was palnning ‘help’ his gang members in the jail with funds.
