Panaji: India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, has issued a warning about heavy rainfall in parts of Goa, as the southwest monsoon has advanced closer to Goa in Shirali, near Karwar from Mysuru in Karnataka by Monday.
“There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places on Tuesday,” director, IMD, Panaji, M L Sahu said. On Wednesday, heavy rainfall is very likely in a few places and very heavy rainfall is likely in isolated places.

The rainfall activity increased during the last 24 hours with heavy rainfall of 70mm recorded in Sakhali, while Pernem 60mm, Old Goa 48mm, Margao 40mm, Canacona 30mm, Valpoi and Sanguem and other places recorded rainfall on a lesser scale. The rainfall brought much needed relief, as the maximum temperature was normal across Goa and the highest maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius was recorded at Panaji.

After being stuck in Mysuru for about three days despite an early onset in Kerala on May 29, the northern limit of monsoon moved to Chitradurga in interior Karnataka and Shirali in Bhatkal of Uttara Kannada district by Monday. In what may be good news to Goa, the intensity of rainfall can facilitate the onset of monsoon by Thursday, as forecast by IMD, Panaji.

In 2017, last year, the monsoon had advanced over the state only two days later behind schedule.
