‘NHAI caused problems in Pumpwell, Kottara Chowki’

Mayor Bhaskar K. recently blamed the National Highways Authority of India for inundation in Pumpwell and Kottara Chowki following heavy rain in the city on May 29.

Mr. Bhaskar said the flyover work at the Pumpwell junction was being carried out by the NHAI for over five years. Few days ago, they dug up the road. Heavy rain led to blockage of drains that led to waterlogging at Pumpwell junction, he said.

Mr. Bhaskar said the NHAI failed to clear roadside drains off the National Highway at Kottara Chowki.

Claiming that the Mangaluru City Corporation had dredged major and other stormwater drains two months ago, Mr. Bhaskar said action would be taken to clear encroachment if the committee set up by the Deputy Commissioner found any.

He added that the loss in the city following the rain on May 29 was estimated to cost ₹41.38 lakh. This included full damage of 16 houses, severe damage to six houses and partial damage to 18 houses.
