COIMBATORE: A
Tamil family of five, living and settled in Atlanta in the US, participated in cleaning Vellalore and Ukkadam lakes in Coimbatore district on Sunday.
The family members helped environmentalists plant saplings and remove water hyacinths. They gave funding to buy 1,500 saplings to be planted around the water bodies.
The family comprising two children, two men and a woman conducts a food festival in Atlanta on the World Earth Day (on April 22) every year to raise funds to support environment protection initiatives in
Tamil Nadu, said Coimbatore-based environmentalist R Manikandan.
The NRIs, who have been in Tamil Nadu for the last one week, are on a mission to participate in eco-friendly and environment protection activities in the state.
The family come to India every year to participate in an environment project every year.
“One of our contacts who was in touch with the family had told them that we need financial and physical support in planting saplings and removing water hyacinths from the water bodies. So the family gave us funding to procure 1,500 saplings,” he added.
