35-year-old Mumbai doctor commits suicide by injecting anaesthesia

The Bhoiwada police found that the doctor, Rupali Shivaji Kalkundre, was suffering from depression and undergoing treatment for the same.

A 35-year-old senior resident doctor of Tata Memorial Hospital, who lived in the hospital premises, committed suicide on Saturday night, by injecting herself with an overdose of anaesthesia.

The Bhoiwada police found that the doctor, Rupali Shivaji Kalkundre, was suffering from depression and undergoing treatment for the same. Dattarey Patil, senior inspector, Bhoiwada police station, said an accidental death case has been registered and further investigation is going on.

According to the police, Kalkundre was found dead by her husband, also a doctor at the hospital, when he returned home at around 4.30pm. “When he got no response after ringing the door bell and knocking, he opened the door with another key and found Kalkundre unconscious. He rushed her to the hospital as he stayed in the hospital premises. She was declared dead as she had overdosed on a shot of anaesthesia which was found by the police and the family members,” said an official from the Bhoiwada police station.

The police have not yet found any suicide note. “Kalkundre was working as a fellow in anaesthesia at the hospital. Despite best efforts, she could not be revived. The case was handed over to the concerned police station and a case of suicide was registered. She was under treatment for depression for the past few years, said SH Jafri, public relations officer, Tata Memorial Hospital.
