Coimbatore:
Police on Monday arrested S Kithar Mohammed,
a resident of Vadavalli and a native of Kerala, in connection with the fake currency note case. Police tracked his cellphone and arrested him from a house in Anaikatti.
City police had on Friday arrested B Ananth of Maruthakonar Street at Velandipalayam and seized fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination with a face value of Rs 1.18 crore from him. They also seized a colour photocopying machine and a computer. Ananth told police that he had made the fake notes using the photocopying machine with the help of his friends Sundar and Kithar Mohammed.
Kithar is a repeat offender and was arrested in 2011 by CB-CID for circulating counterfeit notes in Coimbatore and Erode district, police sources said. “Sundar is the mastermind behind the racket as he is well-versed in various computer software packages. Kithar has contacts in markets and TASMAC shops, and was in charge of circulating the notes,” a police officer said.
Police are now on the lookout for Sundar. “We are checking whether they were funding Maoists. Since the notes were mere photocopies, the gang did not make quick money. We have alerted banks and Tasmac shops after busting the gang,” a senior police officer said.
