Sea erosion continues unabated in coastal areas

Heavy rains continued to lash the city on Sunday, but despite the warnings from the district administration against going to sea, fishermen were seen setting out on their boats, desperate to earn their livelihood. On Friday night, a boat carrying three fishermen from Anchuthengu had capsized in the waves and one fish worker had died.

The fish workers in the coastal regions of the district have also been hit by severe sea erosion over the past few weeks. The sea, which had advanced several metres inward, is yet to recede in many areas. Several of the families in areas like Valiyathura, Cheriyathura, Anchuthengu and other places continue to live in rehabilitation centres.

Compared to Saturday, the monsoon showers were weaker on Sunday. According to the district administration and Fire and Rescue Services officials, no cases of flooding, damage to houses or loss of life were reported through the day.
