A woman was arrested on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping a three-year-old boy in outer Delhi’s Alipur, the police said. The child was rescued and has been reunited with his parents, they said.
Claiming that she was drunk at the time of the incident, accused Savita said she had not kidnapped Shiv but had taken him to her sister’s residence in the neighbouring area.
Investigators said the motive for kidnapping has not been established so far but they are verifying the claims made by the accused.
Shiv’s parents live in a slum in Narela and work in a factory in the area.
“His mother Pooja told the police late on June 2 that she had left Shiv in the care of her neighbour Savita while she and her husband left for work. When the couple returned, they could not find Savita or Shiv,” said a police officer.
The family and other neighbours went door to door looking for Savita and Shiv but in vain. Following this, the couple filed a complaint at a police station.
The police received a tip-off regarding Savita, after she was spotted near a temple in the area. She was arrested and the boy was rescued from her sister’s home. Locals told the police that Savita was drunk quite often. Further instigation is under way.
