Thomas Isaac has offered all support for the ongoing
"Save Killiyaar" mission, a project being initiated jointly by
Haritha Keralam mission and local bodies. While inaugurating the convention organised by city corporation at
Jagathy auditorium here on Monday, finance minister Thomas Isaac said that the waste being dumped from hotels and houses near the river body is the major reason for contamination of
water body.
"This two year long project will receive full support from the state government. In addition to conservation of Killiyaar, we should also ensure that steps are taken to retain whatever objectives being attained through revival mission ,'' said Thomas Isaac. The convention elected mayor
V K Prasanth as the chairman of city mission and Vanchiyur Babu, chairman, development standing committee as the general convenor.
Heads of all standing committees shall be the co-convenors of city mission. It was also decided to organise ward level convention by June 30 as part of the mission. An organising committee comprising representatives of service organisations, labour organisations, merchants, Kudumbasree workers, political parties were also formed during the convention. Puzha arivu nadatham will be organised on July 15. The convention also decided to organise awareness campaigns between July 15 to August 15. All houses will be visited and awareness will be spread regarding conservation of Killiyaar.
The support from finance minister is going to be crucial in undertaking major cleaning works to revive Killiyaar. The health wing of city corporation has estimated 590 loads of waste to be cleared from Killiyaar as part of the survey conducted ahead of cleaning of Killiyaar. The survey report submitted to corporation pointed out that a huge quantity of waste mostly plastic, aquatic plants, silt need to be removed across eight circles and except for one place, machines need to be deployed for cleaning of Killiyaar.
The survey has found out 1096 houses close to Killiyaar and the health officials identified 276 violations mostly directing liquid and other kinds of waste to Killiyaar. The officials have served notices to 235 owners and 174 violations have been addressed.
