Man having ice cream killed after car hits him in Chandigarh

The 26-year-old was on a bike with his friend and had stopped to have ice-cream in Sector 35 when the Tata Indica car side hit them before fleeing, police said.

A Kurali man was killed while his friend and an ice-cream vendor were injured after a speeding car hit them near Kisan Bhawan in Sector 35 late of Saturday night.

Gagan Gautam, 26, who worked at a sweetmeat shop, was on a bike with his friend Kuldeep and had stopped to have ice-cream when the Tata Indica car coming from the Sector 22/23 side hit them before fleeing, said police.

The bikers were rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) where Gagan was declared brought dead while Kuldeep’s condition is stated to be critical.

Om Parkash, the ice-cream vendor and a resident of Kajheri village, is also undergoing treatment at Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16.

Balongi man held

Police later traced and arrested the car driver using its Haryana registration number.

“The driver has been identified as Karan, 26, of Balongi. He claimed his foot got stuck in between the clutch and brake following which he lost control of the vehicle. He was returning from Panchkula after visiting his sister and fled as he got panicked,” said Sector-36 station house officer (SHO) Ranjodh Singh

A case has been registered under Section 304A (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving) and 337(causing hurt by endangering life of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
