Kerala Assembly session begins

Saji Cherian, who was recently won the Chengannur byelection, was sworn in to the Kerala Legislative Assembly today.

Mr. Cherian of the CPI(M) won the byelection, necessitated by the death of K.K. Ramachandran Nair of the CPI(M), by a margin of 20,956 votes, staying ahead of his rivals D. Vijayakumar of the Congress and P.S. Sreedharan Pillai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in all the 10 panchayats and the Chengannur municipality forming part of the constituency.

The 11th session of the Kerala Assembly will seek to regularise 17 Ordinances awaiting their turn to become law.

One of Central America’s most active volcanoes has erupted in fiery explosions of ash and molten rock, killing several people, while a towering cloud of smoke blankets nearby villages in heavy ash. An undetermined number are missing, and Guatemalan authorities fear the toll could rise.

The Volcan de Fuego exploded shortly before noon Sunday. About four hours later, lava began flowing down the side of the mountain.
