The parents of a young girl found dead in her crib in 2016 face sentencing in connection with her death.
Avery McCoy was 17 months old when she died Nov. 9, 2016, in an apartment in Riverside the couple was renting.
The girl’s father, Anthony Lamont McCoy, 36, of Wellman, pleaded guilty last week in Washington County Court to involuntary manslaughter, a Class D felony carrying up to five years in prison, and two counts of child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, court records show.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 3. Earlier, a jury convicted the girl’s mother, Ambrashia Marie Chrzan, 29, of Wellman, last month of the Class B felony of child endangerment resulting in death, court records show. She faces up to 50 years when sentenced July 27.
The two were arrested in October 2017 after an investigation into the little girl’s death.
In an earlier interview, Washington County Attorney John Gish confirmed that McCoy’s death occurred at a house her family was renting in Riverside at the time. Medical Examiner Paul Towner later said the autopsy found that Avery McCoy was badly malnourished at the time of her death, and weighed just 11 pounds. The average weight for a 17-month-old is 24 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The exact cause of death was undetermined.
Avery was born May 31, 2015, in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. According to an obituary from the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, she had 11 sibling survivors. A brother had proceeded her in death.
