Mumbai’s new development plan will come into effect from June 22

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday issued a circular saying the city’s development plan (DP) 2034 will come into effect from June 22, following enquiries from architects and urban planners. Permissions for development, it said, will be granted as per the DP 1991.

As per the provisions of the Monopolistic and Restrictive Trade Practice (MRTP) Act, the sanctioned DP and Development Control and Promotional Regulations (DCPR) come into force one month after the state government publishes the gazette for the DP.

On May 23 this year, the Maharashtra government published the gazette for the DP 2034. Therefore, the DP 1991 and the transition policy will be in effect until June 22, before the sanctioned DP can be applicable, taking into consideration the provisions of the excluded part of the plan.

The BMC will soon issue guidelines of the transition policy applicable until suggestions and objections are examined and the excluded part of the DP is sanctioned.

Speaking to architects and town planners on Friday, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta said, “BMC will soon clarify the regulations of the transition policy. Meanwhile, the sanctioned DP will be applicable for permissions after June 22, after taking the excluded part into consideration, which is open for suggestions and objections.”

Furthermore, June 22 happens to be the last date for citizens to file suggestions and objections to the excluded part of the DP, where changes have been made by the state government, before sanctioning the DP proposed by BMC’s planning committee.
