Veteran journalist Leela Menon, 86, who pursued the cause of women and the marginalised sections of society, died at a care home for the aged here on Sunday night.
She was the Chief Editor of Janmabhumi daily. Ms. Menon had worked in national dailies earlier. A slew of her exclusive news reports, including investigative ones, were noted nationally. She is known for taking on cancer with which she was diagnosed over two decades ago and for continuing with her journalism career. She was born at Vengola, Perumbavoor, in 1932.
Ms. Menon served in the Postal Department as a clerk before studying journalism.
She ventured into journalism in 1978 with The Indian Express in New Delhi. She used to write for The Hindu, Outlook, and regional dailies. Ms. Menon penned an autobiography titled Nilaykatha Symphony. Her husband Major Bhaskara Menon pre-deceased her. The body will be kept at Ernakulam Town Hall from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday. The cremation will be at the Ravipuram crematorium.
