SWANTON, Vt. (AP) — The man who has spent the last eight years leading the U.S. Border Patrol in his native Vermont as well as upstate New York and New Hampshire has retired.
The Border Patrol says John Pfeifer retired recently after 31 years.
Pfeiffer, a native of Burlington, joined the Border Patrol in 1986. His first posting was in Texas.
He returned to Vermont in 1988 and worked for years out of the Newport office.
In 1997 he was wounded in a shootout with Carl Drega, the New Hampshire man who killed four people before he was killed by police on a Vermont back road.
Pfeifer served again in Texas and at headquarters before returning to Vermont in 2010 to lead the Swanton Sector, which patrols Vermont, New Hampshire, and northeastern New York.
