The new website promotes smoke-free and tobacco-free living, offering visitors quick and easy access to search more than 20,000 smoke-free Washington, DC apartment units located in over 100 residential communities in Washington.

An advanced search function makes it easy for site visitors to find smoke-free apartments by neighborhood, property building type or the properties smoke-free areas. Detailed property listings profile the apartment community, highlight community amenities and offer a glimpse of the neighborhood, with walk and transit scores and integrated Google mapping for each location.

For properties considering a smoke-free policy, the website offers a variety of tools and resources for landlords and tenants to navigate the process of developing and implementing smoke-free rules. The site features a toolkit for apartment buildings going smoke-free, sample policies and action plans, and testimonials from managers and tenants at local smoke-free properties.

"It's been two years in the making, and we are excited to launch the DCSmokefreeHousing.org website to showcase thousands of local housing options that prioritize cleaner air and healthier breathing," said Rolando Andrewn, Breathe DC President and Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the DC Tobacco Free Coalition. "By making it easier for local residents to find smoke-free housing and access smoke-free housing resources, we are expanding the District of Columbia's robust offerings to support healthy lifestyle choices."

People living with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases, children, seniors, and pets are especially susceptible to the health risks caused by exposure to secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke.  In apartment dwellings, smoke travels through shared ventilation systems and becomes trapped in carpeting, furnishings, and clothing, posing a health threat to non-smoking residents throughout the property. The only way to truly protect people from the threat that smoke exposure causes is to limit their exposure to smoke. Smoke-free housing is the best way to do that," added Andrewn.

Breathe DC's web portal will be updated regularly with new apartment listings, updated tools, and information to support smoke-free living for everyone interested. Site visitors are asked to explore the website, create a free account to submit their listings, and sign up for emails to get the latest news from Breathe DC.
