It's not who moved the cheese as much as who made the cheese. And if you're talking mozzarella, there's a chance it was made in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is the fourth-highest producer of mozzarella cheese — the most produced cheese in the state — according to the most recent figures released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. In March 2018 alone, Pennsylvania dairy farms produced more than 19.5 million pounds of mozzarella. That accounted for more than half of the cheese produced by the state that month.
In honor of National Cheese Day on Monday, here are a few cheesy facts to chew on.
6th: Pennsylvania's ranking as a cheese producer. The state produced 37.25 million pounds of cheese in March 2018. Only Wisconsin, California, Idaho, New Mexico and Minnesota produced more cheese.
March: The busiest month for cheese production in the country. In 2017, March and December saw the highest production of any months.
22.8 million: Pounds of Italian cheeses produced by Pennsylvania in March 2018. Italian cheese include mozzarella, Parmesan, provolone, ricotta and Romano cheeses.
30: Pounds of cheese eaten by Americans each year. According to the USDA, 11.5 pounds of that is mozzarella, while 9.6 pounds is cheddar.
25: Percent of Americans who say that blue cheese is the worst type of cheese, according to a survey by Innit, an app that helps users create meal plans and shopping lists. Rounding out the bottom of the list are Limburger, Goad, American and Swiss cheeses.
