Second victim of South Coast rampage named as former policeman

A 54-year-old man who died after he was allegedly attacked with a hammer in a carjacking on the NSW Far South Coast on Friday has been identified as former senior constable Michael Horne.

Mr Horne died at St George Hospital on Sunday afternoon, after a man allegedly went on a violent rampage in and around Bega.

The former police officer has been described by community members on social media as a "wonderful man" and a "lovely chap ... who paid the ultimate price".

Police said the rampage began about 3.30pm on Friday when Murray Deakin, 20, stabbed his grandparents, Gail and Thomas Winner, at their home on East Street, Bega, before fleeing in their car.

Mrs Winner, 69, died at South East Regional Hospital, while Mr Winner, 71, is in a critical condition at St George Hospital.

It is alleged that, after abandoning the car in the neighbouring town of Bournda, Mr Deakin then carjacked another car, using a hammer to attack its driver, Mr Horne.

A female passenger in the car escaped without injury.

The incident sparked a five-hour manhunt involving specialist tactical police, negotiators and PolAir.

On Sunday, Mr Deakin faced Batemans Bay Local Court on one count of murder and two counts of wounding with intent to murder.

He is expected to face an additional charge of murder when he reappears in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday.

Chief Inspector Susan Charman-Horton said on Saturday the rampage was "just a terrible event".

"The local community would be quite upset by the incident. This is not something that is usual in the area,” she said.

"[Mr Deakin] was unwell [when he was arrested]; he needed to be taken to hospital to be looked at by an expert."
