KAKINADA: An aged couple from Sarpavaram here on Saturday submitted a petition to East Godavari SP Vishal Gunni requesting for mercy killing, following their son’s refusal to sell a part of the family’s property for their treatment.

Responding immediately, the SP directed Sarpavaram inspector Chaitanya Kishore to address the issue, but as no action was taken on Sunday, the couple decided to stage a dharna at the police station, after which the inspector counselled them and their son. After nearly three hours of discussions, the son agreed to hand back the property documents which he had pledged with a bank in Samalkot for a loan.
Sixty-two-year-old Pitta Appa Rao lives along with his wife Lakshmi in a small portion of their house, while his son lives along with his family in another portion. The house is valued at Rs 2 crore in the open market.

Rao has been suffering from a kidney ailment for some time and needs dialysis every two days. A surgery to treat the problem will cost Rs 30 lakh. Appa Rao and his wife decided to sell a part of their house for the surgery, but their son Pitta Ravi bluntly refused to comply with them. In fact, when the couple told him their plan, he shouted at them and asked how much longer the old man wanted to live.
Lakshmi said she did not want their son to support them or give them money. “All we want is to sell a part of the property which we earned with our sweat and blood,” she said.
