John Lloyd resigns as public service commissioner

Public service commissioner John Lloyd has resigned from his role.

Mr Lloyd was appointed to the position by the Abbott government in 2014 and was responsible for upholding standards of integrity and conduct in the Australian Public Service.

The Australian Public Service Commission said on Monday that he had resigned.

Mr Lloyd advised the governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove that he would resign from his position as APS Commissioner on August 8.

"We have no further comment at this point in time," a spokeswoman said in a statement.

The public service commissioner is also responsible for promoting the code of conduct and can hold inquiries into allegations of misconduct by agency heads and other current and former government employees.

Mr Lloyd is a former Australian Building and Construction Commissioner, who oversaw the public service commission as the Abbott government used new workplace bargaining rules that have been blamed for years of industrial turmoil between public servants and their employers.

A member of right-wing think tank the Institute of Public Affairs, Mr Lloyd has been a controversial figure as leader of the public service commission and a target of criticism by the main public sector union and Labor.
