2019 BMW Z4 M40i Announced, Promises To Be A “Purebred Roadster”

BMW has released the first pictures and video of the 2019 Z4 Roadster.

Previewed by last year’s Z4 concept, the production model is currently undergoing final testing and BMW says the roadster will “soon go out on public roads.” The company also promised the car will be instantly recognizable as a “purebred roadster” as it features a long hood, short overhangs, a low center of gravity and a traditional soft top.

A closer examination of the photos reveals the range-topping Z4 M40i will have an aggressive front bumper and a distinctive grille featuring Y-shaped inserts. Moving further back, we can see a rakish windscreen and front fender vents. Designers also installed slender taillights, a dual exhaust system and a ventilated rear fascia.

BMW was tight-lipped on specifics but confirmed the Z4 M40i will feature a new six-cylinder engine which is “extremely powerful.” The company declined to mention numbers but previous reports have suggested the model will use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine that develops around 385 PS (283 kW / 380 hp).

Regardless of the engine’s final rating, BMW confirmed the Z4 M40i will come equipped with a lowered sports suspension that has electronically controlled dampers. The car will also have a new front axle, a high-performance braking system and a locking rear differential. Other highlights include lightweight alloy wheels with mixed tires.

The automaker was coy on additional information but said testing has revealed the new Z4 will offer a “tangible increase in sporty flair.” In particular, the company says the model will be more agile and precise while still remaining comfortable.

According to BMW suspension guru Jos van As, “The vehicle concept of the new BMW Z4 is geared consistently towards agility and driving dynamics. The high level of body stiffness and the very rigid suspension attachment provide the perfect basis for a set-up that guarantees the performance qualities of a genuine sports car in terms of steering precision as well as longitudinal and transverse acceleration.”

BMW declined to say when the Z4 will be unveiled but previous reports have suggested the car could be introduced this summer. It should then make an appearance at the Paris Motor Show in the fall.
