2019 BMW Z4 Prototype Driven: Is It A Proper Sports Car?

After admitting that the current-gen Z4 is not on the same dynamic level with the Porsche Boxster, BMW went back to the drawing board and came up with an entirely new generation model of their roadster.

Co-developed with Toyota’s all-new Supra, Munich’s own roadster is entirely new inside and out, featuring a new platform, engines and tech.

It’s about 50kg (110lbs) lighter than its predecessor, while boot space has increased by around 20 percent, regardless if the roof is up or down. Thus, it already sounds way better, but how does it actually feel on the road?

AutoExpress traveled to BMW’s own test track in the South of France, where they met a Z4 prototype, after driving an M2 to get used to the circuit. And almost instantly, the reviewer finds it hard not to praise it, saying that it’s more involving to drive than before, handles very good and should be capable of reaching 60mph (96km/h) in less than 5 seconds for the Z4 M40i.

Before letting you watch the review below, let us tell you a couple more things about the new BMW Z4: it will be unveiled in a few weeks time in M40i trim, with lesser models to follow. It’s expected to cost under £40,000 ($53,380) in the United Kingdom.
