Tesla spends millions in materials that end up scrapped: report

Tesla Inc. has spent millions on materials that end up scrapped, according to a Business Insider report on Monday that cited company estimates reviewed by the publication. So far this year the Silicon Valley car maker has spent almost $150 million on scrap materials, according to the report. In a response to Business Insider, Tesla called the $150 million figure an "overstatement" and said that the number was in the millions, but not that high, the report said. The high scrap rates are a normal part of a production ramp, Tesla said. Tesla shares rose 1.7% on Monday, and the shares are up 4.2% this month, compared with a 1.5% gain for the S&P 500 index.
