HYDERABAD: Civil Services aspirants this year were bowled over as the United Public Service Commission (UPSC) upped the difficulty level of prelims examination that was held on Sunday. However, speaking to some of those who gave the exam revealed that they were expecting it keeping in mind the drastic cut in number of civil servants to be hired by the government this year. While in 2017 notification was released by UPSC for 980 officers, this year it was just 782. In Hyderabad, the civil services prelims exam was conducted at 101 centers, informed Hyderabad District collector Yogita Rana. A total of 48,939 candidates took the exam in Hyderabad, of which only 47.6 per cent appeared for both exam.
Aspirants who gave the exam said that most of the questions in the Paper-I General Studies (GS) were such which required application of concepts and a deep knowledge of subjects as the number of direct questions were almost negligible. Even the Paper-II Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) had some tough and lengthy questions, that proved the two hours time for the test not enough for some candidates.
One of the aspirants, Brijraj Rautela, said, “Unlike last year, focus was not just on one subject. Moreover, there were many questions which were designed such that answer for it would depend on knowledge of more than one subject. There were very few questions from current affairs. The overall difficulty level of both the papers was higher.”
