The “child-lifting” rumour that caused widespread panic and mob attacks on unsuspecting people continued even on Monday. A beggar woman, who was seen speaking to a child outside a house in Chikkapur village in Malur was cornered by a mob who suspected her to be a child lifter.
As people who caught her talking to the child started questioning her, a huge crowd gathered at the spot. Meanwhile, some people alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and took the woman into their custody.
“On enquiry, it was confirmed that she was only a beggar, and not a child lifter,” Malur police sub-inspector Vasanth told The Hindu. The woman was handed over to her relatives residing at KGF, he said.
