Several lambs have been euthanised after a stock truck rolled on a rural Canterbury road.
Vincent Jones was driving along Marshmans Rd, near Rangiora, when he saw the stock truck roll off the road in front of him about 12.20pm on Monday.
He said he pulled over and went to the truck, first helping the driver's son out of the front passenger seat before climbing in to undo the driver's seatbelt. Both people in the stock truck were unhurt.
Jones and the driver then set about freeing the hundreds of sheep in the trailer – though some were already loose following the crash, which had split the trailer in two. He said several sheep were crushed in the crash.
"He [the driver] was pretty shaken up but he was trying to get all the sheep out that were alright.
A truck carrying hundreds of lambs has rolled near Ashley, north of Christchurch.
"It was pretty crazy, [there were] sheep everywhere mate."
Jones said he did not know why the truck rolled. He said the driver told him he had moved over on the road a bit when he saw Jones coming, then the truck had rolled.
Several of the lambs were reportedly crushed in the crash and had to be euthanised.
A police spokeswoman said several lambs had to be euthanised after the crash. The exact number was not known.
She said a vet and an animal control team were called to the scene.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
