New mother-and-child block inaugurated

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said that new facilities, including a cardiology wing, will be arranged at the District Government Hospital here.

Inaugurating the newly built mother-and-child block at the hospital here on Sunday, the Minister said a cath lab would be set up at the hospital in two months.

The State government would also appoint a cardiologist, Ms. Shylaja added.

The Health Minister also said the new mother- and-child block was the first building to be completed under the ₹76-crore master plan for the comprehensive development of the hospital.

The construction was completed on a war footing using ₹2.4 crore of the district panchayat, she noted.

Ms. Shailaja said that though funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) were released for construction works under the master plan, they delayed for a few months because of technical obstacles such as environmental clearance.

The ongoing works would be completed in three years.

Nipah alert

The Minister said the evaluation of doctors was that a second-stage outbreak of Nipah infection was unlikely.

The government had made all preparations to handle the situation if the Nipah outbreak entered its second stage, she said.

Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally presided.

District panchayat president K.V. Sumesh and Kannur Mayor E.P. Latha were among those present at the function.
