BENGALURU: Chief minister H D
Kumaraswamy, facing his first acid test with unabated rain hitting parts of the state, declared Rs 5 lakh compensation for those who died.
On Saturday, a rain-related casualty was reported from
Belagavi, when
Imran Nadaf was washed away in a drain along the Pune-Bengaluru highway. It is said that Kumaraswamy has personally taken on the job to monitor the situation, and sought reports from districts every two or three hours.
“The CM has asked for reports and we are monitoring the situation closely,” said additional chief secretary to CM M Lakshminarayana. Every district which has a rain-related issue has a task force headed by the deputy commissioner, and is preparing reports on even losses and damages to private properties.
Anti-encroachment drive on drains in Bengaluru soon
For Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy will consider a city tour after assessing the situation with civic agencies on Monday. The anti-encroachment drive on stormwater drains will resume shortly, the CM said.
After a meeting with agriculture department officials, Kumaraswamy said frequent flooding of Bengaluru during the rainy season was creating havoc, primarily due to encroachment of stormwater drains, which needs to be removed.
