RAMANATHAPURAM
Alleging a serious lapse on the part of police for the caste clash in Kachanatham village, in which three Dalits were hacked to death, Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Nedumaran said the victims would get justice only if the probe was directly supervised by the Madras High Court.
Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Mr. Nedumaran, who was on a private visit, said some of the members of the dominant community which carried out the attack were already facing cases and if the police had taken action against them the triple murder would not have taken place, he said. “The callous attitude of the police was the reason for the murders and the police should take the blame,” he said.
Referring to the Thoothukudi violence, M.r Nedumaran said Sterlite Copper was responsible for the rally against its plant turning violent, resulting in the killing of 13 people in police firing. If the protesters had the intention to indulge in violence, they would not have gone to the Collectorate with their family members, he said.
Sterlite management after distributing money to some political parties and local officials had created trouble in the rally, he alleged. There was police excess and the National Human Rights Commission should fix the erring police personnel and those who were in plainclothes and opened fire, he said.
Mr. Nedumaran demanded that the Centre should constitute the Cauvery Management Authority immediately and pave way for the opening of Mettur dam on June 12. He said kuruvai season had already commenced but the farmers could not take up cultivation for want of Cauvery water.
