BELAGAVI: The body of a 7-year-old boy, missing since five days, was found in a 12-ft deep garbage pit at Pote Mala here on Saturday. Police suspect that Ganesh Hosamani, who went missing from Malaprabha Nagar, Vadagaon, might have accidentally fallen into the effluent-filled pit and drowned while playing in the area.
Police said prima facie, it is a case of accident. However, they have decided to conduct an inquiry, examining all angles in the case.

Local residents alerted police after spotting the swollen body in the pit. Shahapur CPI N Mrityunjay reached the spot. Police fished out the body before conducting the panchnama.

Manjunath Hosamani, the victim’s father, had filed a complaint in Shahapur police station on Tuesday. Police and fire brigade launched a search operation in open wells, but to no avail. Even CCTV footages failed to trace the boy.

Parents of the victim are weavers and daily wage workers. The case generated a lot of debate in the area. When the body was found, a large number of people from the locality gathered at the spot. A case has been registered in Shahapur police station and an investigation has been started.
