PUNE: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has floated tenders for the underground section of the Pune Metro rail project.

The 5km stretch will connect agriculture college in Shivajinagar and Swargate. MahaMetro has planned work in two stages.

The tenders for the first phase — construction of tunnels between agriculture college and the northern end of Budhwar Peth station, and design and construction of Civil Court and Shivajinagar stations — have been invited.

Interested agencies will be able to submit tenders till July 10, following which the bids will be scrutinized and work orders will be issued. The actual ground work will start after that, officials said.

The tenders for the second phase, from Budhwar Peth Metro station to Swargate, are likely to be called in a few days. As per the plan, the elevated stretch will start at Pimpri and go via Nashik Phata, Dapodi, Bopodi and Khadki up to Range Hills. It will go underground at agriculture college depot and end at Swargate. The route alignment and location of the stations have been finalized.

Officials said tunnel boring machines (TBM) will be deployed for the tunnelling work. To lower the TBMs, MahaMetro is digging the shafts at Swargate and agriculture college. An agency has been appointed for the purpose.

Phase-I involves construction of the two stations and a tunnel crossing the Mutha river after the Civil Court station. Officials said that the Metro line will cross the river near Dengle bridge and go via Kasba Peth and Phadke Houd towards Budhwar Peth.

MahaMetro had started civil work on both lines — Vanaz-Ramwadi and Pimpri-Swargate —late last year.
