Woman killed in collision with car driving on wrong side of M1

A woman has died after the station wagon she was a passenger in was hit by a hatchback being driven on the wrong side of the M1 on the Gold Coast overnight, according to police.

The crash happened about 12.45am on Saturday when a hatchback heading north in southbound lanes hit a station wagon travelling south on the correct side of the motorway.

The station wagon's female passenger was seriously injured and later declared dead at the scene.

Police said the female driver of the station wagon and the man behind the wheel of the hatchback were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

Australian Traffic Network reporter Jaylan Yilmaz said by 5.30am only one southbound lane was open and traffic delays stretched back about four kilometres.

However, the delays had cleared and all lanes reopened just after 7am, Mr Yilmaz said.
