Seven to come up in Vizag district in the first phase

Those who have been waiting for quite a while to savour a meal at a pocket-friendly price at Anna canteens will have it very soon as the first phase of the facility is all set for the launch on June 8.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department is speeding up the process to ready the proposed canteens.

A total of 203 Anna canteens are coming up in urban local bodies across the Stat. Visakhapatnam will have 25 such canteens.

“The objective is to serve quality food to common man, meeting the food safety standards and treating the customers with dignity. Of 110 ULBs across the State, 71 have been identified to set up Anna canteens. Based on the response, the facility will be made available in the remaining ULBs,” says K. Kanna Babu, Director of the Municipal Administration.

In the first phase, about 26 Anna canteens will be readied across the State, including seven in Visakhapatnam. “The construction work of seven canteens is almost in the final stage. The rest will be completed by the month-end,” says D. Srinivasan, Project Director of Urban Community Development, GVMC.

Menu

While ‘Idli’, ‘puri’, ‘upma’ and ‘pongal’ form a part of the breakfast menu, a platter of rice, curry, pickle, dal or sambar and curd will be served for lunch and dinner at a vnominal price in these canteens.

Centralised kitchens will supply food to Anna canteens located within 50-60 km radius.

Authorities concerned said a minimum of 15 centralised kitchens will be set up across the State with ₹5 crore each and NGOs, societies and charitable trusts will be roped in to run these kitchens.

A majority of these canteens are being built on government lands. However, some of them are on leased land.
