‘Services, including renewal of taxes, licence will be rolled out in a phased manner’

All activities of vehicle registration including fitness certificates, collection of taxes, permits, hypothecation and transfer of ownership and enforcement will now be completely computerised with the Transport Department rolling out the Vahan 4.0 software at the Regional Transport Office on the 100-feet-Road here. Revenue and Transport Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan launched the Vahan software on Friday.

Mr. Shahjahan said that Puducherry was the first State in the South to make the Vahan portal functional in all the Regional Transport Offices at Oulgaret, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal and Puducherry. At present, all registration procedures are being done manually and dealers have to visit the RTO which is time consuming. Now they can submit the application for the registration online and pay the fees and taxes through e-payment.

Technical information of vehicles will be fetched directly from the database of manufacturers which would eliminate clerical mistakes during data entry and ensureroad worthiness of the vehicles.

The UT has now fully been enabled with Vahan 4.0 software with e-payments of taxes, fees, uploading of all scanned documents linked to a centralised server. SMS alerts will be sent to the applicant at every stage.

The Transport Department has launched the online registration of vehicles at Kattukuppam, Thirubhuvanai, Oulgaret, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal and Puducherry. This will facilitate the department to interconnect as far as every purpose of registration is concerned. The software is tailor-made for the RTOs and new services including renewal of taxes, permits and license for the public will be rolled out in a phased manner, Mr. Shahjahan said.

VAHAN is the flagship e-governance application under the National Transport Project, a mission mode project initiated in 2006. The purpose was to automate the RTO operations related to vehicle registration, permit, taxation, enforcement in the whole country. A.S. Sivakumar, Transport Commissioner were present.
