Hyundai Invests $388 Million In Alabama To Build New Plant, Update Existing One

Hyundai is investing $388 million in Alabama to construct a plant dedicated to manufacturing engine heads and update an existing engine plant.

During an event in Montgomery, Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey joined Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama president and chief executive Dong Ryeol Choi to announce the news. The expansion of the existing plant will be done to support production of the Sonata, Elantra and Santa Fe.

Of the $388 million that will be invested, approximately $40 million will be used to build the new engine head facility that’ll include a 260,000-square-foot building. Construction of the plant is due to be completed in November 2018 and it will be operational by mid-2019. The investments will also create 50 new jobs for locals.

“We are so very honored that Hyundai has once again chosen to significantly invest in Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama,” chairman of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, Judge Charles Price said.

“As home to Hyundai’s only North American manufacturing facility, the Montgomery community pledges to continue our enormously successful 16-year partnership for this new expansion and beyond.”

Hyundai is expected to begin construction of a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder next year for the Santa Fe and Sonata. The 2.0-liter engine used by the Elantra will remain in production.
