The Tirupur Collectorate visited by nearly hundreds of visitors every day face hardship as just one elevator out of total four function.
“Except one elevator near the front entrance, the remaining three elevators have either been under repair at frequent intervals or been kept off. Even though I go to Collectorate frequently, more than one elevator was found functioning only on rare occasions”, said N. Shanmugasundaram, consumer activist and president of Nallur Consumer Welfare Association.
An official working in one of the government departments on the fifth floor pointed out that huge crowd waiting to get into the only functional elevator used to be a daily scene between 9.45 a.m. and 10.15 a.m.
Since many of the offices where more number of people frequent were situated on the fourth and fifth floors, the lack of adequate functional elevators had been causing difficulties.
“The parents with walking problems and small children are left with no other options but to climb the stairs to reach Education department on the fifth floor as it looks scary to see large number of people get into the only functional elevator”, said K. Palanisamy, a parent who came for a purpose related to his child.
