Congress MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi threatened by gangsters

DW BUREAU / Chandigarh

Congress MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi Navtej Singh Cheema claimed that two gangsters, whose house was raided by authorities recently in connection with recovery of weapons, had threatened him, holding him responsible for the police action. The MLA said he came to know about the threats given by gangsters Amarbir and Harjot, from villagers of his constituency.

The gangsters who are facing several criminal cases are brothers and they belong to Bullowal village, which falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi constituency, Cheema said.

“The house of the brothers was raided by the Uttar Pradesh Police some time back here in connection with the recovery of weapons from some criminals. Their parents also fled the house,” he said.

Later this month, one of the brothers along with his accomplices came to the village and threatened locals, Cheema claimed.

“They threatened school children, a dairy owner and a village doctor with their weapon. Villagers were terrified with their threats,” the MLA said.

Cheema said when villagers told him about the alleged activities of both the brothers, he brought the issue to the notice of the Punjab director general of police.

“I even apprised the local SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police) about the matter,” he said. The local police even put up check posts in the village, but they are yet to be caught, Cheema said.
