Girl injured in firecracker accident dies, 4 arrested

Succumbs to burn injuries sustained in freak incident

A 10-year-old girl, who was injured along with five children and a 21-year-old woman, in a fire accident at a car festival of a church near Gummidipoondi on Sunday, succumbed to injuries on late on Thursday. Four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

On Sunday, the accident occurred when the villagers were celebrating the annual festival of the Holy Spirit Church in Thokkampur near Arambakkam.

The church car was being taken around the village. Children, who were in the choir, were being taken by a mini vehicle, in which crackers were stored.

A spark from the fireworks fell on the crackers, triggering a blast. Six children and the woman, who were in the vehicle, sustained burns.

They were rushed to the Government Kilpauk Hospital, where three of them were in a serious condition.

The injured were identified as Kavya, 9; Sanjay, 8; Arjun, 11; Joseph, 5; Harish Babu, 6; and Farveena, 21.
