Emma Marie Mills, 90, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 25, 2018, at Crestview Specialty Care in West Branch. A memorial service to celebrate Emma Marie's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson St., with Pastor Jennifer Lutz officiating. Burial will be
held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 10, at Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St., Iowa City, IA 52240.
Emma Marie was born on Feb. 8, 1928, in Aledo, Ill., the daughter of Francis Calvin and Ada Mary Baldwin Gaines. She grew up in the Aledo, Ill., area. Marie enjoyed riding horses and playing with dogs as a child. Leonard Mills married his Emmy on Nov. 4, 1944, in Wapello, Iowa. They had enjoyed nearly 31 years together when Leonard passed away on Feb. 10, 1975.
Upon moving back to the Iowa City area, Emma had numerous jobs, one in particular at National Computer Systems (Pearson), from which she retired in 1992 after 13 years. She continued working at home doing alterations and childcare (she loved interacting with babies and young children) until well into her 80s. Emma was a beloved member of her neighborhood and was known for befriending her neighbors and mail carriers. Marie especially loved tending to her flowers and raspberry patch at home. She was an avid reader and always had a Western novel on her end table! Emma attended Zion Lutheran Church and was a dedicated volunteer at Mercy Hospital. Emma Marie will be dearly missed by her neighbors, her family and the Hoylands.
Survivors include her sister, Patricia George; nephew, Keith (Ann) George; great-niece, Allie George; and niece, Pamala George, all of Simi Valley, Calif.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Gaines; niece, Katrina (Butch) Huggins; great-nephew, Adam Huggins; and great-niece, Brandi Haines, all of Iowa City; niece, Kelly (Monty) Huddleston; great-niece, Kelsey Huddleston; and great-niece, Haley Huddleston, all of Cedar Rapids; longtime friends, Christy Curry and Kevin Hoyland of Iowa City; plus "her girls," Meredith Hoyland, Waco, Texas, and Grace Hoyland, Iowa City.
Emma Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Ada; her husband, Leonard; and a brother, James, on July 11, 2013.
